Brothers,
My name is John Love, and I am currently serving as the President here at the Alpha Alpha Chapter. To give you a quick background about myself, I spent the majority of my childhood in Charlotte after moving from Atlanta in 2003. I am a Junior studying finance in Kenan-Flagler and will intern with Barings this upcoming summer in Charlotte. I am writing to inform you all of our active status and to reignite the connection between our alumni and the active brothers. An update about the Chapter has been long overdue, so I hope you find this letter helpful.
The last few years have been tumultuous for our Chapter, the larger Greek community, and all of you as we continue into the second year of the pandemic. I am proud to announce that our Chapter’s probationary status was lifted in January 2020. The Chapter has learned from its mistakes and cultivated an appropriate culture for the current climate. Unfortunately, the COVID situation sent us home during Spring Break in March 2020 for the remainder of the semester. Luckily, we have been able to occupy the house for the entirety of this academic year. Although COVID restrictions made a traditional recruitment format impossible this year, the Chapter adapted to the times and recruited a class of 19 fine gentlemen. The University has been very restrictive on social events this year, but with the rapid vaccination campaign taking place across the country, I anticipate a normal fall semester.
I am very excited for our prospects moving forward and truly believe we have the opportunity to thrive. It is not a secret that the Greek community has been under attack more in the past year than ever before. The drug investigation has forced the Beta and Phi Gamm houses to close this semester and COVID violations did the same to Phi Delt.
Although this is somber news for the Greek community, it also presents an opportunity to have a great rush in the fall semester. IFC informed us recently that we will be able to have in-person recruitment, which is great news. I want to echo Carter’s message and say that we want your help. With over 1,200 living alumni, I believe we can grow our rush list to 200+ names before the end of this semester. This is a lofty goal, but we can achieve it through our own diligence and the vast network you all have built. If you know of anyone coming to Chapel Hill next year, please add his name to our Google sheet or reach out to one of our rush chairs (information below).
Lastly, please mark your calendars for the weekend of October 8th-10th. We are bringing back Alumni Weekend and want all of you to be able to attend. We have already booked a band, The Barons, to play for us on Saturday, October 9th. This will be a traditional Chi Phi football tailgate on our front lawn for our game against FSU. A golf tournament for Sunday, October 10th, is also in the works if we generate enough interest.
Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions or just to catch up. I can’t wait to meet many of you in-person this fall! Go Heels!
Best,
John Love
